Many of us want to be wealthier. You want all your debt paid off. You don’t want to worry about bills.
Before this can happen, you must first begin to change your money habits. You need to become your own financial manager.
To help you get started, I have compiled a list of ways in which you can begin getting your finances under control.
If you are paying out monthly bills, you might want to consider automating some of them. This will help you to pay them on time (since you will have the ability to choose when the bill gets paid), and it will make it SO much easier to remember payment dates.
Start to skip unwanted spending. Create a budget and allocate some money for yourselves every month that can be spent where you wish. The hard part – NOT going over this amount! If you want to start saving, spend less!
This is also including in budgeting. We have an Excel worksheet and we simply put down all incoming money and we also record how much we are spending and where. It has really helped me with my spending habits if I have to write down how much money I just spent and where it went to.
Have Money Goals
As you begin saving money, come up with goals for that money! Do you want to save for retirement? Do you want a better house? Make a list and be specific! This will help you stay on track so that the money goes where it is supposed to go.
Even though it seems obvious, make a goal to save as much money as you can. Choose to stay at home and eat a home cooked meal. Make your own coffee. It takes some practice (especially for me), but even the few dollars that you choose to keep will make a difference.
Debt has hardly ever helped a situation. Buy only what you need and skip other unnecessary expenses. Use cash and debit cards for expenses. I would only use credit cards for absolute emergencies.
Find a Side Job
In this age of technology, there are so many options to finding a side gig for some extra cash. If your family is strapped for money, try to find something small that won’t completely stress you out and will allow your family some wiggle room in finances.
These are just some of the many ways that you can begin to save money. Our family has gotten a lot smarter about money this year and we haven’t even completed all of these steps!
I hope these ideas will help motivate and inspire all of us to become smart about money!
